Of Football and Sausage, or, How the Famous Green Bay Packers Football Team Came to be Named....

April 25, 2000
Recently, J. Emmett Clair, former owner of the Acme Packing Company in Green Bay passed away.  He left a legacy as one of the persons accountable for naming the winning Wisconsin football team.

Clair was born in Chicago and traveled to Green Bay in 1919 to partner with his brother, John who was in charge of the Acme Packing.

Curly Lambeau’s father contacted the brothers to sponsor a community football team.  The Acme Company affirmed the decision and received a franchise with the American Professional Football Association for the next two years.  In 1921, Emmett left Green Bay and Curly Lambeau took over the team and franchised with the National Football league.  The Green Bay Packers name remained.  Emmett was born in 1899 and spent the remainder of his days running a meat packing plant.  He was married 54 years and lived a long life of 102.

Now you know the story behind a super bowl winning team name and how it relates to the meat packing industry.
